The Seattle-based coffee company, that started in 1991, has since become a global franchise with a cafe on thousands of high streets around the world.

The brand is a successful example of master franchises, which are businesses that give people the opportunity to buy into a foreign franchise and secure the rights to set up one in their own country.

It’s a growing trend, with an increasing number of global franchises now landing in the UK.

‘Once a potential master franchisee has secured the rights for the UK, the vital thing is to test the viability of the franchise in this marketplace,’ says Richard Holden, head of franchising at Lloyds TSB.

‘If you can demonstrate the business can succeed, then it’s just a matter of recruiting sub-franchisees and expanding the business.’

However, it’s important to remember there are no guarantees that a successful franchise operation elsewhere in the world will be a hit in the UK. Cultural differences can play an important role.
