SOUTH Melbourne’s Nando’s chicken franchise has been fined $19,000 for food safety breaches.
Nando’s Clarendon St proprietor Raymond Liem was found guilty on 10 charges involving poor cleanliness after investigations by Port Phillip Council.
Between June 12, 2007 and January 29, 2008, the council’s environmental health officers inspected the shop eight times.
On each occasion officers discovered the proprietor had failed to keep the restaurant in a clean and sanitary condition or had not complied with orders that the business be cleaned.
“It took a long time for Nando’s in South Melbourne to get the message about cleanliness,” Mayor Janet Cribbes said.
Officers said the main problems included a grease build-up on the floor and underneath equipment in the kitchen, and an inefficient exhaust canopy.
But inspections in May confirmed the shop was operating in a clean state.
Mr Liem was fined $7000, while his company Royal Eastern Victoria was also ordered to pay $10,000 and costs of $2000.
“Persistence pays off,” Cr Cribbes said.
“It took council officers eight visits and lots of argy-bargy, but finally the take-away proprietor got the message and cleaned up.”
Nando’s spokesman Justin Monaghan said the failure of the South Melbourne franchisee to comply with cleanliness standards was disappointing.
