Irish Business News:

The last nine months have been a tumultuous time in the pharmacy sector but the owners of a newly launched franchise believe there are plenty of growth opportunities in the market.

Life Pharmacy is backed by community pharmacy-owned wholesaler Uniphar, and aims to have 90 pharmacies operating under the flag within five years.

The brand, which has been in development for the past two years, came about in response to the changing needs of customers, said Tom McKenna, Life Pharmacy business development manager.

The stores will offer a wide range of new services, including in-store consulting room and health screening facilities for conditions such as high blood pressure, cholesterol and body-fat ratio.

‘‘Pharmacies are not just filling prescriptions any more,” said McKenna. ‘‘Time was, from the consumers’ point of view, you nearly needed permission to enter a pharmacy. A pharmacy was just for treating illness. But society has changed and people want more knowledge and information so they can stay well.”
