The US American Free Churches are not only using modern media to get their message across but also marketing methods similar to those used within franchising. According to an article published in the Wall Street Journal, the churches are setting up global organizations focusing on one central leading figure and using the same music, the same flags and the same logo no matter where the church is.
One preacher is quoted as saying to the Wall Street Journal that he was trying to emulate the success of Starbucks by using a special corporate design with the aim of setting up at least 50 parishes around the world with a total of 100,000 members. According to the Wall Street Journal, at least half a dozen of such ‘mega-churches’ in the USA have set up international branches over the last few years.
