Saudi Arabia is looking to become the centre of franchising in the Middle East – this was one of the targets announced during this year’s ICEF Franchise Meeting in the country’s capital Riyadh. The only European people participating at the event were Rolf Gerhard Kirst from Franchise Pool International and Marco Hero from the Düsseldorf-based firm of lawyers Tigges as guest speakers.
According to Kirst and Hero, the Saudi government and chamber of commerce would like to see an increase in the number of individual licences granted to entrepreneurs. Franchising has up to now been a fairly rare occurrence in the country. In the majority of cases, franchising in Saudi Arabia means taking over the licence for a brand or product in order to be able to open up more company-owned shops.
