Work-out convenience is crucial. At one time, everyone was at the mercy of a gym’s operating hours. Urges to get up and move at 10 p.m., midnight or 2 a.m. needed to be suppressed — but that is no longer the case.

The 24-hour fitness center is one of the fastest-growing fitness franchises, billing itself as an alternative to oversized and overpriced health clubs.

Some centers, like American Family Fitness and Planet Fitness, both located in Vestal, staff their facilities 24 hours a day Monday through Friday, and from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends. Others, such as the newly opened Gaslamp Gym in Binghamton, operate using a keycard system that allows customers to come and go as they please 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Bob Morris, owner of Planet Fitness’ Vestal franchise, said it was a no-brainer to keep his gym doors open. “From an operational standpoint it was less stressful,” he said. “You would always have staff there; no one could forget to come and open the club.”
