LA’s ‘Sun Spa’ Targets Boulder

LA Sunset Tan, a Hollywood tanning salon chain that’s gained attention through a reality show on E!, has national expansion plans that include opening about eight of its “sun spas” in the Boulder area.

Propelled by the success of its “Sunset Tan” reality show — which chronicles the lives and sometimes feisty interactions among salon employees — the company is embarking on an aggressive franchising program to open 500 franchise locations in the next five years. Colorado, one of the target markets, is expected to have 25 to 30 locations, eight of which should be in the Boulder area, said Marc Kiekenapp, LA Sunset Tans’ president.

“The show is bigger away from California than it is here,” Kiekenapp said. “It’s more watched in the Midwest. … People are looking to have that California style.”

Kiekenapp said he is in contact with a candidate for an area representative who would handle the franchising for all of Colorado.
