One of Montgomery County’s biggest names in barbecue will open a new restaurant today – but don’t look for brisket, ribs or sausage on the menu.

McKenzie’s Burgers & Fries is set to open at 17099 Walden Road in Montgomery this morning. The decision to focus on hamburgers and French fries instead of barbecue was a deliberate marketing strategy by owner Darin McKenzie.

“We love barbecue, but we decided we’d start with burgers in this location,” he said. “We think it’s a good way to get started in the community. We’ll see about expanding the menu later.”

Initially, the 3,600-square-foot restaurant will focus on half-pound burgers, grilled chicken sandwiches chicken nuggets, grilled cheese, hand-cut fries and homemade onion rings. Once the casual dining facility has established itself, McKenzie considers the addition of barbecue a distinct possibility.
