Checking In With Checkers

October 26, 2009 by Cris | 0 Comments

Tampabay.com:

Founded in 1986 in Mobile, Ala., quirky Checkers Drive-In Restaurants Inc. didn’t become a national player until moving its headquarters to Tampa Bay a few years later and merging with Rally’s. But it has been plagued by sluggish performance.
silva

The chain’s trademark double-drive-through restaurants — down from more than 50 to only 15 in the bay area — are promoted in ads as “little place. BIG TASTE.” Wellspring Capital, a private equity firm that bought Checkers in 2006, installed Rick Silva, a 44-year-old veteran Burger King executive, as chief executive in 2007. After a top-level housecleaning, he set up systems to restore consistency, understand customers and invigorate store growth. Sales are up slightly, but more than the industry average in 2009, at a chain that did $660 million in business in 2008, up $11 million from 2006.

Here are some excerpts from a recent conversation the Times had with Silva.

The widely acclaimed Slows Bar B Q in Detroit’s Corktown sealed the last piece of its financing deal Wednesday to open a takeout and catering business in the Midtown area.

Barring any city zoning glitches, Slows to Go will open on the northwest corner of Cass Avenue and Alexandrine Street in the middle of next year, said Ryan Cooley, one of the owners of the new venture.

The 6,000-square-foot building expands the reach and capacity of the Michigan Avenue restaurant, which was an instant success when it opened four years ago, west of the old Tiger Stadium.

Slows is expected to achieve close to $4 million in sales this year. The new building will allow for the preparation of larger quantities of food compared to the original restaurant, which has a tiny kitchen and limited smoker capacity. It also will fill carryout and catering orders. “We’re just trying to keep up with demand,” said chef Brian Perrone, who also is an owner.
